Most non-profit organizations are very good at delivering an end product. By “end product”, we refer to the service or services for which they were developed to perform or deliver. Functions such as feeding the hungry, bringing the arts and culture to an area which had none previously, preserving wildlife and the myriad of other things non-profits do which make our world a better place to live.

However, many non-profits - especially small to medium sized organizations - do not have their management and business operations in order. Good intentions do not matter to a grant maker who wants to see solid management and financial practices in place before making an award.

Having encountered this problem more than once, we have been drawn into organizational consulting by default. Martin’s background in business, along with his proven knack for organization, has given him the ability to help clients and others to run more efficient and streamlined operations. This many times saves operational time and money. It also establishes an organization as a “player” with grant makers who want to see a well run non-profit.

Many forget the hard fact that a non-profit is a business, and should be run like one. Budgets, proper accounting, marketing, advertising and all the other things which should be in place for a successful operation need to be instituted and maintained. Although we are proficient in a number of these areas, we can easily recommend products and professional services for areas which we are less than comfortable in dealing with.

You should remember that the old adage “You have to pay to play” rings very true in the non-profit sector. Your organization will need to commit to spending money to be efficient and accountable. It will save money in the end and allow you to deliver your end product in a more efficient and economical manner, while keeping your donors happy and developing new ones on a regular basis.
